Although “Carol” has done
considerable sewing, stitching, and crocheting throughout her life, she is
a relative newcomer to the craft of bead weaving. She believes the seed
was planted when, at the age of 10, she received a beaded bracelet from
her mother, which she promptly disassembled and restrung into her own
design. That seedling flourished during an introductory course in bead
weaving at Manor College in 2005. “I was hooked,” she says.
People of many cultures, including those from Russia, Africa, North
American Indian, Poland, and the Ukraine, practice bead weaving. Although
Carol is fascinated by all the ethnic variations of this craft, many of
which use brilliant multiple colorings in a single piece, she is drawn to
the subtleties of the Ukrainian style. She prefers keeping her palette to
one or two softer shades, often interspersed with crystals.
Carol enjoys pouring over books and magazines for inspiration and
continues her studies of this craft. The variety in bead colors, the
numerous combinations possible, and the endless design possibilities that
can be developed from a beginning set pattern continue to captivate her.
Her pieces include necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.
