The first time I can recall seeing
mosaics was during a visit to New York about 15 years ago. An artist
friend took me to a street in Greenwich Village where the lampposts,
sidewalks, and side of a building were covered with colorful pieces of
dishes, cups, and tiles. It was one of the most beautiful, extraordinary
things I had ever seen and made a lasting impression on me.
About six years ago, I took a class in mosaics given by Carol Stirton-Broad
at the Abington Art Center and was hooked immediately. Although I had
studied many different artistic mediums throughout my life, there was
something very fulfilling about working with mosaics, and I have been
doing them ever since.
I love perusing thrift shops for china and old dishes and looking for
eye-catching designs and patterns. The next step is cutting or breaking
them into pieces and mixing them with a variety of other materials, such
as stained glass, vitreous and ceramic tiles, glass gems and pieces of old
jewelry. I love seeing how the combination of colors and materials comes
together into an unique design. Often I have no plan beforehand and start
with a pretty flower from a piece of china or tile or a color that
inspires me. Then I start adding and mixing materials until it comes
together. I love that sort of “ooh-ah” feeling I get as I see a design
emerge.
I create mosaic frames, mirrors, watering cans, vases, tables, and
anything that can be used in the home or garden. I also enjoy doing
commissions and can be reached at the above telephone number or email
