Born in the Philadelphia suburb of Glenside, Pennsylvania, John was the youngest of six children. His mother always encouraged his creative side so he dabbled in everything from painting to pottery. Another key element in Johns childhood was his love of the outdoors. Exploring the woods and building tree forts instilled an appreciation for nature and all its offerings that continue throughout his life.
During his early college years John took his first "real" pottery class and enjoyed it very much. But, as we all know, life happens, and John could not pursue his interest in clay until about ten years later. He was finally able to enroll in a pottery class at the Earth Center for the Arts where he studied under Jennifer Miller-Manzi. She encouraged him to not only explore the form and function of this craft but to have fun. John soon found himself totally absorbed in this new found love for pottery.
After a few years of study John was offered an opportunity to become an instructor at the Earth Center for the Arts studio, a position he still enjoys. This has enabled him to now encourage students, old and new, to embrace the joy of pottery regardless of skill level.
John opened his own studio in 2010 where he found renewed delight in the freedom to play with all his creative ideas. John's keen aesthetics, sense of humor, and eye for detail bring each piece to life. His work bears a distinctive look and feela true sense of homage to nature with a touch of whimsywhich tells the viewer,
This is a John Armstrong one-of-a-kind piece. |
